Maria Istvanova, M.A. PhD., previously worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences and served as a lecturer of Chinese at the Department of East Asian Studies, Comenius University Bratislava. After obtaining the master’s degree at the University of Vienna, she completed her doctoral studies at the Department of East Asian Studies at Comenius University Bratislava in 2022 with a dissertation project concerned with the investigation of the mother tongue interference in the process of acquiring Chinese by making use of learner corpus research. The dissertation project was pursued in cooperation with the East China Normal University as a part of China Studies Program Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship (2019-2020 and 2021-2022).
Her research interests are focused on the fields of Chinese as a second language research, corpus linguistics with a particular focus on Chinese learner corpora, and analysis of learner’s erroneous pronunciation in Chinese. Dr. Istvanova has previously taught courses on Chinese grammar, acquisition of pronunciation in Chinese, and translation seminars of specialized Chinese. She has been also supervising BA and MA students.
