Zhao Xiaoyang is a PhD candidate in the Department of East Asian Stduies at the University of Göttingen. Her research interests include the history of leisure culture, conceptual history, and material culture, and she seeks to conduct historical research on these topics through a global perspective. She began her doctoral studies at the end of 2022, focusing on the history of leisure culture in China from the late Qing to the 1930s, with a particular emphasis on summer leisure practices.

In June 2017, Zhao Xiaoyang received her BA in “Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages” from Shanghai International Studies University. She went on to complete her MA study of Modern Sinology at the University of Göttingen in August 2022. Her master’s thesis was in the field of material culture history, examining the local and global production and consumption history of fountain pens in Shanghai during the late Qing and Republican periods. Since October 2020, she has been working as a graduate assistant in the Department of East Asian Studies and has been involved in the joint project “Worldmaking from a Global Perspective: A Dialogue with China” in Germany.
