In June 2019 (as well as in January 2020), Prof. Dr. Selçuk Esenbel will be working at the Department of East Asian Studies. She is Professor of History at Boğaziçi University, and has long been Director of the Asian Studies Center at the same institution. Her research interests cover, for instance, Japan and the world of Islam, Japanese pan-Asianism as well as modernization in Japan and Ottoman Turkey. In addition, Prof. Esenbel has been the recipient of various other awards, like the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. Her stay in Göttingen is made possible by a Georg Forster Research Award granted to Professor Esenbel by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Prof. Esenbel is hosted by Prof. Dominic Sachsenmaier. On June 18th, she will be giving a public lecture at the Department of East Asian Studies.
